Jehan-Jacques Blancpain
Jehan-Jacques Blancpain is one of the oldest watchmaking companies in the world. The company was founded in 1735 in the village of Villeret, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. Today, the company is an international leader in fine watchmaking. The Blancpain family is responsible for the success of Blancpain watchmaking.
The Blancpain family was extremely prosperous. The Blancpain business thrived during the washout of industry. Their sons Paul-Alcide pursued a career in brewing in Fribourg, and Frederic-Emile continued the company’s quest for modernity. The Blancpain family expanded the business and built a new factory on the same grounds as the original farmhouse, which was built in 1815. The factory first used water power.
In 1933, Blancpain’s father passed away. There was no male heir, so his business passed on to his daughter, Betty Fiechter, and sales director Andre Leal. Blancpain was renamed Rayville-Blancpain. The new name came about due to a phonetic anagram of Villeret. The Blancpain family didn’t want the name change to be arbitrary.
Blancpain was known for their watches with many complications. For instance, the Blancpain 1735 had a minute repetition, tourbillon, perpetual date, moon phase calendar, and flyback chronograph. The watch was so complicated that it took one year to build it. The company became part of the Swatch Group in 1992 and is considered one of the finest timepiece manufacturers in the world. Its “1735” watch was one of the first complex luxury timepieces with a tourbillon, automatic winding mechanism, and an eternal calendar.
During the 1940s, Blancpain’s business expanded greatly and Betty Fiechter was joined by her nephew Jean-Jacques Fiechter. The company became a juggernaut that manufactured watches under the Blancpain brand name and was also a movement manufacturer. Some of the company’s biggest success stories were the Fifty Fathoms diving watch, which was widely adopted by divers. In 1956, the company produced another success: the Ladybird women’s watch with the world’s smallest round automatic movement.
