Jehan-Jacques Blancpain

Jehan-Jacques Blancpain, who founded the world’s oldest watch brand, started his own small workshop in 1735. Working out of his home in the village of Bernese in the Jura, he was able to incorporate modern techniques into the ancient art of watchmaking. In time, the Blancpain family passed on their craft from generation to generation. The Blancpains continued to manufacture fine timepieces until the early 20th century. Frederic-Louis Blancpain would later take over the family business in 1815 and begin serial production. By the end of the century, he collaborated with the renowned watchmaker John Haywood.

The Blancpain family’s business continued to thrive, even during the washout of industry in Switzerland. The Blancpain brothers specialised in making high-end watches with lever escapements. Paul-Alcide went on to become a brewer in Fribourg. Frederic-Emile remained committed to modernity, though he spent his time in Lausanne. The Blancpain family eventually constructed a new factory and began using water power from the Suze river.

Founded in 1735, Blancpain is one of the oldest watchmaking brands in the world. It was Jehan-Jacques Blancpain who first saw the potential of the watchmaking industry. In 1735, he established his first workshop in Villeret, in what is now the Bernese Jura, which is part of the French-speaking region of Switzerland. Since then, Blancpain’s watches have continued to enjoy great success, and many of these watches have even been passed down from one generation to the next.

After Blancpain died in 1933, there were no male heirs. Betty Fiechter, the daughter of the founder, bought the Blancpain business and teamed up with Blancpain’s sales director Andre Leal. The Blancpain name changed to Rayville-Blancpain. This was not an optional name change.

The Blancpain family’s mission was to reinvent watchmaking. They built two-story factories and developed men’s and women’s watches. Despite the challenges, they managed to remain at the top of the watchmaking world and maintain their luxury line. Today, they are a global brand with a wide market.

Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms watch was introduced in 1953. It was developed with the request of the French navy’s Combat Swimmers. This watch featured a round movement, which later became the standard for diving watches. After the success of the Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain was able to expand their business into a major watchmaker, selling both watches and movements under the brand name. Another success was the Ladybird watch in 1956. It had the world’s smallest round automatic movement in its time.
