Jehan-Jacques Blancpain

The Jehan-Jacques Blancpain watch brand dates back to 1735 when Jehan-Jacques Blancpain, a Swiss watchmaker, began work from his humble home in the Jura region. Today, the brand is considered one of the world’s oldest watch manufacturers. The company is credited with creating many revolutionary improvements in watches that have revolutionized the traditional watch industry.

During the industrial washout, Blancpain flourished. Paul-Alcide went on to study the brewing trade in Fribourg and was joined by his son, Jules-Emile. The family continued to evolve the brand and eventually built a new factory with two storeys in front of the original farmhouse. This factory was the first to utilize water power from the Suze river.

While Jehan-Jacques Blancpain is considered the world’s oldest watchmaking brand, his story is one of perseverance. In the 1730s, Jehan-Jacques Blancpain was earning his living as a farmer, and it wasn’t until 1735 that he set up his own watchmaking company. From there, Blancpain began producing parts and full ebauche movements for pocket watches. Later, he expanded his business to produce full watches and sold them throughout Europe.

During the 1960s, Blancpain needed more money to expand production. The company merged with others in 1961 and became a major force in the SSIH. By 1971, production had grown to over 220,000 pieces. After his mother died in 1971, her son Jean-Jacques Fiechter took over the company.

Blancpain’s name changed when a new owner acquired the company. He renamed it Rayville-Blancpain. This is a phonetic anagram of Villeret, so the name change was intentional. The Blancpain brand continued under the new name.

Blancpain watches are known for their high quality and beautiful craftsmanship. While Blancpain watches are not as complicated as Patek Philippe, they can still be highly desirable. The company only produces 30 watches per day, so they are highly coveted. Most Blancpain watches are sold directly from the manufacturer or through third-party retailers.

Today, Blancpain is part of the SSIH group, which also includes Omega, Tissot, and Lemania. Blancpain is a central hub for SSIH, and they produce movements for the group. In 2010, Jacques Piguet buys Blancpain, hiring Jean-Claude Biver as its vice-chairman of the executive committee.
